What is a percolator?
A percolator is a type of coffee maker that works by continuously cycling boiling water through coffee grounds to create a concentrated, full-bodied coffee. It was a popular method of brewing coffee in the 1970s but has since fallen out of favor in favor of pour-over and drip coffee makers.
How does a percolator work?
A percolator consists of a chamber at the bottom where water is heated to boiling point and a perforated basket at the top where coffee grounds are placed. As the water boils, steam pressure causes it to rise up a tube in the center of the percolator and is then dispersed over the coffee grounds, allowing the water to seep through the grounds and extract the flavor and oils from the coffee. The resulting coffee is then collected in a separate chamber at the top of the percolator.
