Understanding Rust
Rust is a common problem for metallic objects that are exposed to moisture and air. When the surface of the metal comes into contact with moisture or oxygen, it begins to corrode, producing the orange-brown compound we call rust. Rust can weaken the metal and cause it to break down over time. In the case of a keychain, rust can make the keys harder to turn in locks and can even cause the keychain to break. Supplies You’ll Need
To remove rust from your keychain, you’ll need a few supplies. First and foremost, you’ll need a rust remover solution. There are many commercial rust removers available on the market, like Evapo-Rust or Metal Rescue, that you can pick up at your local hardware store or online. You’ll also need a container to hold the solution, a wire brush or steel wool, and protective gloves to keep your hands safe from the chemicals in the solution.
The Rust Removal Process
Once you have all the supplies you need, it’s time to start the rust removal process. Start by filling your container with the rust remover solution, following the instructions on the package. Generally, you’ll need about one gallon of solution for every 4-5 pounds of metal you’re trying to clean. Next, submerge your rusty keychain in the solution, making sure it’s completely covered. Let the keychain soak for the recommended amount of time, usually 15-30 minutes.
After the keychain has soaked, take it out of the solution and use your wire brush or steel wool to scrub away any remaining rust. Be gentle, as you don’t want to scratch the surface of the metal. Finally, rinse the keychain thoroughly with water to remove any leftover residue from the solution. Dry the keychain completely with a clean towel.
Preventing Rust in the Future
The best way to deal with rust is to prevent it from forming in the first place. To keep your keychain rust-free, make sure to keep it clean and dry, especially if you live in a humid or coastal area. If you’re going to be exposing your keychain to water, like if you’re going to the beach or washing your car, be sure to dry it off completely afterward. You can also apply a coat of sealant to the metal to protect it from moisture and rust.

Now that you’ve removed the rust from your keychain, it’s important to take good care of it to keep it looking its best. You can polish the metal with a cloth and a bit of oil to restore its shine, or you can leave it as-is for a more rustic look. Whatever you choose, be sure to handle your keychain gently and avoid exposing it to harsh chemicals or abrasive surfaces. With proper care, your keychain will last for years to come.
