Creative butter storage solutions for your kitchen
Although butter dishes have been around for centuries, there are alternative storage solutions that can keep your butter fresh and easy to access.
Keep it on the counter
One simple way to store butter is to keep it out on the counter. Room temperature butter is easier to spread, and a covered butter dish can help protect it from dust and insects.
Use a butter bell
A butter bell is a traditional French butter dish that keeps butter fresh without refrigeration. The dish has two parts: a base filled with water and a lid for the butter. When the lid is inverted and placed in the base, the water creates an airtight seal that keeps the butter fresh and spreadable.
Butter storage in the fridge
If you prefer to keep your butter in the fridge, there are other storage options available. Many butter manufacturers sell butter keepers with built-in covering or sealing lids designed to fit a standard butter stick perfectly. These keepers keep your butter fresh and spreadable without taking up too much space in the fridge.
Use a butter crock
A butter crock is a ceramic or stoneware container that allows you to store butter without refrigeration. You put soft (not melted) butter into the top half of the crock, then add cold water to the bottom. The water creates an airtight seal, preventing mold growth while keeping the butter soft and spreadable for up to a month.
