Understanding Balance Bikes
A balance bike is a type of bicycle that is designed to help young children develop their balance and coordination skills. They are typically made with lightweight materials, have no pedals, and require the child to propel the bike with their feet. But just like with any other bike, there is a proper riding technique that parents should teach their children to ensure safety and proper enjoyment of the balance bike experience.
Starting Out
Before your child hops on the balance bike, it’s important to make sure that they have the right protective gear, such as a helmet, elbow pads, and knee pads. Once they are suited up, the first step is to adjust the bike’s seat to the appropriate height so that their feet can touch the ground comfortably. Then, encourage your child to sit on the seat and start walking the bike forward using their feet. This will help them get used to the feel of the bike and develop their balance.
Learning to Glide
Once your child is comfortable walking the bike, the next step is to help them learn to glide. This involves lifting their feet off the ground while the bike is in motion and coasting for short periods of time. To do this, encourage your child to push off the ground with their feet, then lift them up to glide. It’s important for them to keep their feet close to the ground so they can quickly regain their balance if necessary.
Turning and Braking
Learning to turn and brake are essential skills for any bike rider, including those on balance bikes. To turn, your child should lean their body in the direction they want to go and use their handlebars to steer. To brake, they should use their feet to drag them against the ground until they come to a complete stop. Encourage your child to practice turning and braking in a safe and open area, away from any hazards like cars, people or buildings before heading onto the streets or bike paths.
Having Fun
At the end of the day, the most important thing is for your child to have fun while riding their balance bike. Encourage them to explore and experiment with new techniques while always being mindful of safety. Taking the time to help them develop proper riding technique will not only create great memories, it will also set them up for a lifetime of safe and enjoyable bike riding.
