The Best Way to Remove Rust from a Chisel
If you use chisels regularly or own a set, you may have noticed that rust can accumulate on the blades over time. Not only does this affect the appearance of the chisel, but it can also impact its performance. Rusty chisels can make cutting more difficult and cause the blade to wear down more quickly. However, removing rust from a chisel is not difficult, and there are several effective methods you can try.
Method 1: Use Vinegar
Vinegar is an effective and affordable rust remover that can be used to clean chisels easily. Soak the rusted part of the blade in vinegar for several hours, or until the rust begins to dissolve. Scrub the blade with a wire brush or steel wool until the rust is completely removed. Rinse with water and dry the blade thoroughly before using it.
Method 2: Try Electrolysis
Electrolysis is a more complex but highly effective method of removing rust from a chisel. You can create an electrolysis bath by filling a plastic container with a mixture of water and baking soda, and then placing a battery charger in the water. Attach the negative terminal of the charger to the chisel and the positive terminal to another piece of metal, and let the chisel soak for several hours. The rust will be drawn from the chisel and collect on the positive metal piece. Scrub the blade with a wire brush or steel wool to remove any remaining rust.
Method 3: Sandpaper or Emery Cloth
For light rust or surface stains, sandpaper or emery cloth can remove the rust from your chisel with relative ease. Start with a low-grit sandpaper, such as a 120-grit, and work your way up to a finer grit, such as 320-grit, until the rust is gone. Be sure to use even pressure while sanding the blade to avoid creating an uneven surface or removing too much metal from the blade.
Method 4: Use Chemical Removers
There are a variety of commercial rust removers available that can effectively clean your chisel. Some popular rust removers include Naval Jelly, CLR, and Evapo-Rust. These products can be found at most home improvement or hardware stores. Be sure to follow the instructions and safety precautions as indicated on the product’s packaging.
Method 5: Prevent Rust in the Future
Preventing rust on your chisels is the best way to ensure they stay in good condition for years to come. After each use, wipe the blade clean with a dry cloth and store the chisel in a dry location. You can also use a rust inhibitor or apply a thin coating of oil on the blade. If you live in a humid area, consider investing in a dehumidifier for your tool storage area.
