Ice Skating Simon Says
A classic game with a winter twist. Have the children stand on the ice together and then call out different skating moves like “spin”, “jump” or “skate backwards”. To make it more challenging, say “Simons says” before each move. The kids have to do the move only if you say “Simon Says” before it. If they do the move without the Simon Says command, they’re out.
Scavenger Hunt
Hide different colored cones or stickers around the skating rink. Give each child a list of colors and have them skate around the rink collecting cones/stickers of those colors. The first to collect all the colors on the list is the winner. This game encourages kids to explore the skating rink and helps them practice their skates stops and turns.
Red Light, Green Light
This game is perfect for beginner skaters. Have one child be the “traffic light”. The other children skate towards the traffic light allowing them to skate without stopping if the “traffic light” says “green light”. If the “traffic light” calls “red light”, the other children must stop. If someone is caught moving when “red light” is called, they have to start again.
Obstacle Course
Set up cones, jump ropes and other items in the skating rink. Have the kids skate around the obstacles as fast as they can. You can make it a relay race to encourage teamwork or make it an individual race to see who finishes the course first. This game helps kids improve their skating skills and agility.
Freeze Skating
Just like Freeze Dance, play some upbeat music and have the kids skate around the rink. When the music stops, they have to freeze. If someone continues moving when the music stops, they have to sit out. This game helps kids practice their balance and stopping skills.
