Step-by-Step Guide to Sew an Apron with Pockets

Aprons are a handy accessory that comes in handy in the kitchen and beyond. Making an apron with pockets is an excellent way to organize your tools and keep them close at hand. Below is a step-by-step guide on how to sew an apron with pockets.

Materials:

  • 1 yard of fabric
  • Thread to match the fabric
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape
  • Sewing machine
  • Pins
  • Iron

Step 1: Cut the Fabric

Start by measuring and cutting the fabric. Cut the fabric into a rectangular shape, and its dimensions will depend on your measurements. The standard size is 70×80 cm. If you need a larger apron, cut your fabric longer accordingly. Cut a strip of fabric that is 20×60 cm in size for your waistband. Cut two more pieces measuring 16×25 cm for the pockets.

Step 2: Hem the Edges

Place your fabric on a flat surface and fold the edges inward about 1cm. Iron the fabric to maintain the fold in place. Then fold another 1cm and iron again. Pin the edges in place and sew a straight stitch all the way around the fabric.

Step 3: Sew on the Pockets

Take your pocket fabric and iron in the edges by 1cm. Do this for both pieces of pocket fabric. Position the pockets on the front of your apron where you want them to be. Pin the edges in place and sew around the pocket rectangles with a straight stitch.

Step 4: Attach the Waistband and Ties

Take the waistband strip and fold it in half lengthwise. Iron in the fold to keep it in place. Take the apron and place the top edge of the fabric in the center of the waistband. Pin the waistband in place with the folded edges touching the edges of the apron. Sew a straight stitch down the center of the waistband to attach it to the apron. Next, sew the ties on either side of the waistband. Make sure the ties are long enough to tie around your waist comfortably.

Step 5: Make Final Adjustments

Try on your apron and see if it fits well. If it’s too long or wide, adjust your measurements and trim the apron to fit. If the ties are too long or short, adjust them accordingly. Once you’re happy with the fit, iron the apron to flatten out any creases and give it a final press. Your apron with pockets is now ready to use!
