Tools and materials needed

Before getting started with replacing the seat cushion, make sure you have the necessary tools and materials. You will need a screwdriver, pliers, a staple gun, foam padding (at least 1 inch thick), fabric of your choice, and a pair of scissors. Make sure to have these ready before proceeding with the next steps.

Removing the old seat cushion

The first step is to remove the old seat cushion from the barstool. Turn the stool upside down and use a screwdriver to remove the screws attaching the cushion to the frame. If the cushion is glued to the frame, use pliers to pull it off gently. Once you have removed the cushion, measure its dimensions (length and width) to use as a guide for cutting the new foam padding and fabric.

Replacing the foam padding

Once you have the dimensions of the old cushion, use them to cut the new foam padding. Make sure the foam is at least 1 inch thick. Place the foam on top of the seat frame and use the staple gun to attach it securely to the frame. Start at the center of one edge, staple the foam to the frame, then pull the fabric taut and staple it directly opposite the first staple. Repeat this process on the other two sides, making sure to keep the foam centered on the frame.

Attaching the new fabric

After attaching the foam padding, it’s time to add the new fabric. Cut the fabric to the size of the old cushion (plus an additional 2 inches on each side for stapling). Place the fabric onto the cushion, making sure it is centered properly. Using the same stapling technique as before, start at the center of one edge, staple the fabric to the frame, then pull the fabric taut and staple it directly opposite the first staple. Repeat this process on the other two sides until the fabric is stretched smoothly across the cushion.

Reattaching the cushion to the stool frame

Once you have finished stapling the new fabric, flip the cushion over and check for any loose spots. If necessary, add more staples to secure the fabric and foam padding. Finally, reattach the cushion to the stool frame using the same screws or glue you used to remove the old cushion. Congratulations, you have successfully replaced the seat cushion of your barstool!
