Overview of the problem
Replacing a door knob is a fairly simple task, unless the screws holding the knob in place are not visible. Many door knobs have screws located behind the knob or the rose plate, making them difficult to access. However, with a few tips and tricks, you can easily replace a door knob without visible screws.
Identify the type of door knob
Before you begin, it’s important to identify the type of door knob you have. There are several different types, including knob and lever sets, privacy sets, and dummy knobs. Each type may have a slightly different method for removing and replacing the knob.
Remove the rose plate
In many cases, the screws holding the door knob in place are hidden behind the rose plate. To remove the rose plate, look for a small slot or notch along the edge of the plate. Use a small flathead screwdriver or a thin metal object to gently pry the rose plate away from the door. Be careful not to damage the finish of the plate or the door. Once the rose plate has been removed, you should be able to access the screws holding the knob in place.
Look for a hidden release button or slot
If removing the rose plate does not reveal the screws, you may need to look for a hidden release button or slot. Some door knob designs have a hidden mechanism that allows you to release the knob from the spindle without visible screws. This mechanism may be located on the side of the knob or underneath the rose plate. Carefully examine the knob for any buttons or slots that could indicate a hidden release.
Use a screwdriver or Allen wrench to remove the knob
If all else fails and you still cannot find the screws or a hidden release, you may need to resort to using a screwdriver or Allen wrench to remove the knob. Insert the screwdriver or Allen wrench into the small hole or slot located on the side of the knob. Apply gentle pressure and turn the tool counterclockwise to loosen the knob. Once the knob is loose, you should be able to pull it away from the door, revealing the screws that hold the latch in place.
