Find the Hidden Screws on the Door Knob
Removing a door knob with hidden screws may seem like a challenging task, but with the right approach, it can be done easily. The first step is to locate the hidden screws that are holding the door knob in place. In most cases, these screws are concealed underneath decorative covers or trim plates, making them difficult to spot at first glance. To find the hidden screws, you’ll need to inspect the door knob closely and look for any removable parts or small openings.
Use a Small Screwdriver or Allen Key
After locating the hidden screws, the next step is to remove them using a small screwdriver or an Allen key, depending on the type of screws used. Some door knobs have Phillips head screws, while others may have Allen head screws. Once you have the appropriate tool, insert it into the screw head and turn it counterclockwise to loosen and remove the screws. Take care not to apply too much force as it may damage the screws or the surrounding door knob components.
Detach the Door Knob and Rosette Plates
Once the hidden screws are removed, you can now detach the door knob from the door. To do this, hold the door knob firmly and pull it straight outwards. Sometimes, a gentle twist or wiggle may be required to loosen the door knob from the spindle or latch mechanism. Additionally, some door knobs may have rosette plates covering the mounting hardware. These plates can be removed by inserting a flathead screwdriver underneath the edge and gently prying them off.
Remove the Latch Assembly
In order to completely remove the door knob, you’ll also need to take out the latch assembly, which is the mechanism that keeps the door closed. To do this, locate the latch plate on the edge of the door and unscrew the mounting screws holding it in place. Once the screws are removed, pull the latch assembly outwards, being careful not to damage any surrounding door components. At this point, the door knob should be completely separated from the door.
Reassemble or Replace the Door Knob
After removing the door knob with hidden screws, you can now either reassemble the existing door knob or replace it with a new one. If you plan to reassemble the door knob, make sure to clean any dirt or debris from the components before reattaching them. Align the spindle with the latch mechanism and insert the door knob back into the door, ensuring that it fits securely. Once the door knob is in place, reinsert the hidden screws and tighten them using the screwdriver or Allen key. If you’re replacing the door knob, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for installation and make sure to choose a new door knob that matches the existing style and finish.
