How to make bookends out of concrete featured

Bookends are an often-overlooked accessory in home decor, but they can add a touch of personality to your bookshelf or desk. While bookends can be made out of a variety of materials, concrete has become a popular material due to its durability and versatility. In this article, we will guide you on how to make bookends out of concrete.

Materials

Before we begin, here are the materials you will need:

  • Concrete mix
  • Water
  • Mold (cardboard or silicone mold)
  • Plastic cups
  • Disposable stirring utensil
  • Sandpaper
  • Paint (optional)

Step-by-Step Guide

Follow these steps to make your own concrete bookends:

Step 1: Mix the concrete

Follow the instructions on the concrete mix to create your concrete. Add the concrete mix to a plastic cup, then add water and stir with a disposable stirring utensil. The mixture should have a consistency similar to pancake batter.

Step 2: Pour the concrete into the mold

Pour the concrete mixture into your mold. If you don’t have a silicone mold, you can make a mold out of cardboard. Cut the cardboard to the size and shape you want, and then tape it together to create a form for your concrete. Pour the concrete mixture into your mold until it is half full.

Step 3: Add the bookend weight

Once the concrete has been poured halfway into the mold, place a heavy object in the center to add weight to the bookend. This can be a small rock, piece of metal, or another heavy item that will fit inside the mold. Continue pouring concrete into the mold until it is full.

Step 4: Let the concrete dry

Allow the concrete to dry for at least 24 hours. Once it has dried, remove it from the mold.

Step 5: Sand and paint (optional)

Use sandpaper to smooth out any rough edges on the bookend. If desired, you can also paint the bookend to add a pop of color to your decor.

Concrete bookends are an easy, creative way to add some personality to your bookshelf or desk. With just a few materials, you can make your own one-of-a-kind bookends that will last for years to come.
