Gather your materials
Before you start making your homemade bird feeder, you’ll need to gather all the necessary materials. Here’s a list of what you’ll need:
- A plastic bottle or milk carton
- Scissors or a box cutter
- Bird seed
- Twine or string
- A small stick or wooden dowel
Once you have all of these items, you’ll be ready to start building your bird feeder.
Prepare the container
If you’re using a plastic bottle, start by cleaning it thoroughly and removing any labels. If you’re using a milk carton, cut off the top section, leaving enough room for birds to access the bird seed. Use scissors or a box cutter to cut a small hole near the bottom of the container. This will be where the birds can access the bird seed.
Add a perch
To make it easier for the birds to access the bird seed, add a perch near the hole you created in the previous step. This can be done by attaching a small stick or wooden dowel across the hole. The birds will be able to land on the perch and feed from the container.
Fill with bird seed
Next, fill the container with bird seed. You can find bird seed at your local pet store or garden center. Choose a high-quality bird seed mix that is suited for the types of birds you want to attract. Fill the container to a level that is appropriate for the size of the birds you want to feed.
Hang the bird feeder
Now that your homemade bird feeder is complete, it’s time to hang it up. Use twine or string to create a loop at the top of the container. This loop will be used to hang the bird feeder from a tree branch or a hook. Make sure the bird feeder is secured tightly to prevent it from falling down and spilling the bird seed.
By following these steps, you can easily create a homemade bird feeder that will attract beautiful birds to your yard. Enjoy watching them feed and appreciate the beauty of nature right in your own backyard.
