Step 1: Gather the necessary tools and materials
Before you begin installing a new toilet, it’s important to gather all the necessary tools and materials. Here’s what you’ll need:
- New toilet
- Toilet wax ring
- Toilet flange bolts
- Adjustable wrench
- Screwdriver
- Tape measure
- Putty knife
- New toilet seat (optional)
Step 2: Remove the old toilet
The first step in installing a new toilet is to remove the old one. Here’s how:
- Turn off the water supply by shutting off the water valve located behind the toilet.
- Flush the toilet to drain the water from the tank and bowl.
- Use a sponge or towel to soak up any remaining water in the bowl and tank.
- Disconnect the water supply line from the bottom of the tank using an adjustable wrench.
- Remove the nuts from the toilet flange bolts located on either side of the base of the toilet.
- Rock the toilet back and forth to break the wax seal, then lift the toilet off the flange and set it aside.
- Use a putty knife to scrape off any remaining wax from the flange.
Step 3: Install the new toilet
With the old toilet removed, it’s time to install the new one. Follow these steps:
- Place a new wax ring onto the flange, making sure it is centered.
- Line up the new toilet with the flange bolts and lower it onto the wax ring.
- Press down firmly on the toilet to seal it to the wax ring.
- Replace the nuts onto the flange bolts and tighten them with an adjustable wrench.
- Attach the water supply line to the bottom of the tank and tighten it with an adjustable wrench.
- Turn on the water supply and check for any leaks.
- If necessary, adjust the water level in the tank by adjusting the float valve.
Step 4: Replace the toilet seat (optional)
If you want to replace the toilet seat, follow these additional steps:
- Remove the old toilet seat by unscrewing the nuts on the underside of the bowl.
- Place the new toilet seat onto the bowl and line up the holes.
- Insert the bolts through the holes and tighten the nuts underneath until the seat is secure.
Step 5: Clean up and finish
Once the new toilet is installed and any optional upgrades are completed, it’s time to clean up and finish the job:
- Dispose of the old toilet properly according to local regulations.
- Wipe down the area around the toilet and remove any debris.
- Double-check that the toilet is securely in place and there are no leaks.
- Test the flush and ensure that the toilet is functioning correctly.
- Enjoy your newly installed toilet!
