Wearing Wooden Shoes: A Dutch Tradition
Wooden shoes, or clogs, have been a traditional part of Dutch culture for centuries. Originally worn by farmers and other manual laborers, clogs were designed to protect feet from rough terrain and dangerous tools. Nowadays, wooden shoes are still worn by some Dutch people as a symbol of national identity or as a practical footwear option. But how do you actually wear wooden shoes properly?
Choose the Right Size
Before even attempting to wear wooden shoes, it’s important to find the right size. Clogs typically come in European sizes and can be purchased online or in Dutch stores. It’s recommended to choose a size larger than your normal shoe size, as clogs tend to fit snugly. You want to have enough room to wiggle your toes and flex your feet, but not so much room that your foot slides around inside the shoe.
Wear the Correct Socks
When wearing wooden shoes, it’s traditional to go barefoot or wear special socks called “clog socks.” These socks are made of thick wool and have a separate toe for the big toe. They help keep feet warm and cushioned inside the hard wooden shoe. If you prefer to wear regular socks, choose ones with minimal seams and padding to avoid uncomfortable rubbing or bunching.
Slide In and Walk Gently
To put on wooden shoes, simply slide your foot into the open back of the shoe. Make sure your heel is snug against the back of the clog, and your toes are flush with the front of the shoe. The wooden sole will be stiff and may take some getting used to. When walking, try to take shorter steps and lift your feet slightly higher than you would in flexible shoes. This will help you avoid tripping or stumbling.
Care for Your Wooden Shoes
Wooden shoes are durable and long-lasting, but they still require some maintenance. Keep them out of extreme heat and moisture, and avoid wearing them on wet or slippery surfaces. To clean the shoes, wipe them down with a damp cloth and allow them to fully air dry. Some people also apply a coat of beeswax or other protectant to the wooden soles to keep them smooth and shiny.
