Understanding the basics of sewing
Sewing is a useful skill for everyone to have. Whether it is to fix a tear in your clothes or create your dream quilt, it all starts with the basics. Sewing requires few tools and can be an inexpensive hobby to have. To start, you need a needle, thread, and fabric. Once you’ve got the basic tools, it is time to learn how to sew a shirt button.
Choosing the right button for your shirt
Before you start sewing your button, ensure that you have the right kind of button for your shirt. The ideal button for a shirt is one that is slightly bigger than the buttonhole it will be put into. For example, if you have a 1/2″ buttonhole, use a 5/8″ button. Make sure the button is also thick enough to fit through the buttonhole, but not too thick that it strains the fabric.
Getting started with sewing your button
To sew your button, thread the needle through the eye and tie a knot at the end. It is recommended to use a double thread for additional strength. The first few stitches should be made on the opposite side of the fabric from where the button will be. This will help anchor the button and prevent it from falling off easily.
Creating the buttonhole
Once the anchor stitches are completed, it is time to create the buttonhole. Hold the button on the fabric where it needs to be attached, and mark the button’s location. Holding the button in place can be challenging, but you can use smaller pins or needles to hold it in place while you stitch. Sew the buttonhole stitches over the marked spot. Make sure the stitches are the same size and shape as the button.
Attaching the button onto your shirt
After the buttonhole is complete, it is time to attach the button. Position the button so that it is aligned and centered over the buttonhole. Sew the button in place with several stitches, ensuring that it is secure, but not too tight. When you’re finished, tie a knot on the backside of the fabric and cut the excess thread. You can now try the shirt on and enjoy your handy work.
