Why should you clean your dishwasher filter?
Before diving into how to clean a dishwasher filter, it’s important to understand why it’s necessary. Over time, food particles and debris can build up in the filter, leading to clogs and potentially damaging the dishwasher. Additionally, a dirty filter can lead to dishes not being cleaned properly and a foul odor emanating from the appliance.
Locating the dishwasher filter
The first step in cleaning a dishwasher filter is to locate it. The filter is typically located at the bottom of the dishwasher, either in the center or on the side. Some models may have more than one filter. Consult the dishwasher’s manual if you’re unsure where the filter is located.
Remove and clean the filter
Once you’ve located the filter, remove it from the dishwasher. In some cases, the filter may be able to be lifted out by hand, while in other cases you may need to use a screwdriver or other tool to remove it. Check and clean the spray arms
In addition to the filter, it’s also important to check and clean the dishwasher’s spray arms. These are the arms that distribute water throughout the dishwasher to clean the dishes. Food particles and debris can also collect in the spray arms, leading to clogs and poor cleaning performance. To clean the spray arms, remove them from the dishwasher and rinse them under hot water. Use a toothpick or other small object to clear any clogs in the spray arm holes.
Reassemble and run a cycle
Once the filter and spray arms are clean, it’s time to reassemble them and run a cycle. Be sure to properly reattach the spray arms and filter, making sure they are securely in place. Run a cycle with no dishes or detergent to give the dishwasher a thorough rinse. This will help ensure that any remaining debris or soap scum is removed from the dishwasher.
