Check for Leaks
When your showerhead is dripping, the first thing you should do is check for any leaks. It’s possible that there is a leak in the valve or the pipe leading to the showerhead. To do this, turn off the water supply to the shower and inspect the pipes and connections for any signs of water. Look for wet spots, corrosion, or loose fittings. If you find any issues, it’s best to call a professional plumber to fix the leak.
Clean or Replace the Showerhead
If there are no visible leaks, the next step is to clean or replace the showerhead. Over time, mineral deposits can build up inside the showerhead, causing it to clog and drip. To clean the showerhead, remove it from the wall or ceiling and soak it in a mixture of vinegar and water for about an hour. After soaking, scrub the showerhead with a brush to remove any remaining deposits. If cleaning doesn’t solve the problem, it might be time to replace the showerhead with a new one.
Use Thread Seal Tape
If you’ve cleaned or replaced the showerhead and it’s still dripping, the issue might be with the connection between the shower arm and the showerhead. To fix this, wrap some thread seal tape around the threads of the shower arm before reattaching the showerhead. The thread seal tape will create a watertight seal and prevent any leaks. Make sure to wrap the tape in a clockwise direction and apply enough pressure to ensure a secure connection.
Adjust the Water Pressure
In some cases, the showerhead may drip due to high water pressure. To solve this issue, you can adjust the water pressure at the main shut-off valve. Locate the shut-off valve in your home and turn it clockwise to decrease the water pressure. Start with small adjustments and test the showerhead after each adjustment to see if the dripping stops. If you’re not comfortable adjusting the water pressure yourself, it’s best to call a professional plumber for assistance.
Replace the Shower Cartridge
If none of the above solutions work, the problem might be with the shower cartridge. The cartridge is responsible for controlling the flow of water in the shower and can become worn out or damaged over time. To replace the shower cartridge, turn off the water supply to the shower, remove the handle and trim plate, and unscrew the cartridge from the valve body. Install a new cartridge and reassemble the shower. If you’re not familiar with this process, it’s recommended to contact a professional plumber to ensure proper installation.
