5 Steps to Fixing a Running Toilet

Step 1: Identify the Problem
The first step in fixing a running toilet is to identify the source of the problem. There are several common causes for a running toilet, such as a faulty flapper valve, a stuck float, or a leaking fill valve. Take off the toilet tank lid and inspect the components inside to see if anything is visibly broken or not functioning properly.
Step 2: Adjust the Water Level
If the water in your toilet tank is constantly running, it could be due to an incorrect water level. To adjust the water level, locate the fill valve, which is usually located on the left-hand side of the toilet tank. Turn the adjustment screw or knob on the fill valve to raise or lower the water level. Make small adjustments and test the toilet after each adjustment to ensure it’s working correctly.
Step 3: Replace the Flapper Valve
If the water in your toilet tank is constantly leaking into the toilet bowl, the flapper valve may be the culprit. Over time, minerals and debris can accumulate in the fill valve, causing it to malfunction. To clean the fill valve, shut off the water supply, remove the valve cap, and flush out any debris. If cleaning doesn’t work, you may need to replace the fill valve entirely.
Step 5: Check for Other Issues
If the above steps didn’t resolve the issue, there may be other underlying problems causing your toilet to run. Check the flapper chain length to ensure it’s properly connected and not too loose or too tight. Inspect the overflow tube to make sure it’s not blocked or damaged.
