Understanding the significance of Prayer Rug
A prayer rug is an essential item for Muslims as they offer five times prayer in a day, where the rug is placed on the floor and a person bows down to the Allah Almighty. Therefore, prayer rugs carry religious significance and treated with respect and care. The rug might pass down through generations as an heirloom, so it becomes essential to store it properly to ensure its longevity.
Clean it before storing
Before storing the rug, it is essential to clean it thoroughly. The rug might have accumulated dirt, dust, or bacteria over time, which could harm the rug’s fabric and color. Gently dust off the rug with a soft brush or vacuum-cleaner to avoid damaging the rug’s fibers. If there are any stains, remove them with mild soap and water and let it dry completely.
Choose a proper storage method
After cleaning the rug, the next step is to store it properly. Roll the rug gently, avoiding creases, and wrap it in acid-free tissue paper. Never fold the rug as it might deform the fibers and ruin the rug’s shape. Additionally, it is better to hang the rug vertically after wrapping it so that it does not come into contact with any other object, dust, or moisture.
Keep it in a suitable environment
The environment where you store the rug plays a crucial role in its longevity. Make sure to keep it away from sunlight and dampness, which could fade the rug’s colors and harm its fibers. The ideal temperature and humidity to store the rug should be around 60 degrees Fahrenheit and 50% humidity, respectively. Also, avoid storing it in the attic or basement as these spaces tend to have extreme temperatures and fluctuating humidity levels.
Check the rug often
You do not want to store the rug and forget about it for years only to find out that it has suffered irreversible damage. Therefore, it is necessary to check on it regularly, especially in the initial months, to ensure that it is not deforming, fading, or developing any mold or mildew. If there are any issues, take the necessary steps to rectify them as soon as possible.
