Understanding the Basics of an Adjustable Wrench
Before adjusting an adjustable wrench, you need to understand its basic design. An adjustable wrench is also known as a crescent wrench. Its jaw size can be adjusted as per the requirement. The wrench has a movable jaw and a fixed jaw. The movable jaw can be toggled with the help of a worm screw to make the wrench jaws larger or smaller.
Adjusting the Jaw Size of the Wrench
To adjust the jaw size, move the worm screw in either direction as per your requirement. You can find the worm screw at the base of the movable jaw. Use your thumb and index finger to move the screw. Turn it clockwise to make the jaws smaller and counterclockwise to make the jaws larger.
Tightening or Loosening the Nut or Bolt
Once you have adjusted the jaw size, you can tighten or loosen the nut or bolt. Place the wrench over the nut or bolt head and make sure it fits tightly. Turn the wrench handle counter-clockwise to loosen the nut or bolt and clockwise to tighten it.
Ensuring Proper Grip on the Nut or Bolt
While working with a wrench, it is crucial to have a secure grip on the nut or bolt. If the grip is not tight enough, it may slip and damage the nut or bolt or even injure you. Avoid using an adjustable wrench on rounded or damaged nuts and bolts as it can worsen the situation.
Cleaning and Storing the Adjustable Wrench
After using the adjustable wrench, store it in a dry place, preferably in a toolbox. Wipe the wrench with a clean cloth to remove any dirt or debris that may have accumulated on its surface. A clean wrench will last longer and give optimum performance.
