Canvas prints are fragile and require proper storage to preserve their quality for an extended period. Whether you are moving houses, storing them temporarily or long term, you need to store canvas prints correctly.
Avoid direct sunlight and humidity
When finding a place to store your canvas prints, it’s crucial to avoid direct sunlight and moisture. Direct sunlight can fade and damage the canvas and the ink, causing it to lose its original vibrancy. Moisture can cause mold, warping, and yellowing of the print. You need to store your canvas prints in a dry, cool, and dark place. A basement, closet or temperature-controlled storage unit can work as excellent storage options.
Use acid-free materials
When storing a canvas print, avoid using any acid-containing materials such as newspaper or cardboard boxes. The acids in these materials can seep into the canvas and cause it to deteriorate over time. Instead, use materials such as acid-free paper and boxes or bubble wrap for added protection. Vinyl storage bags can also be useful for added protection against moisture and dust.
Keep them flat or use proper supports
Storing canvas prints flat is recommended to prevent warping, cracking and curling of the canvas. If you can’t store them flat, you can use proper supports such as acid-free foam boards or custom-made supports to keep them rigid. These supports can be used in conjunction with vinyl storage bags or acid-free paper.
Regularly check and clean
It’s essential to make sure your stored canvas prints are safe periodically. Check on them regularly to ensure that they aren’t damaged, faded or yellowed. You can dust them off using a dry cloth or a soft-bristled brush. Cleaning the canvas with a damp cloth is not recommended as it can cause moisture to seep in and damage the canvas. If you are moving them, make sure they are wrapped securely to prevent any damage during transit.
