Gather Materials and Tools
To make a DIY upholstered headboard for a bed, you will need a few materials and tools. Here’s a list of what you’ll need:
- Plywood or particle board
- Foam padding
- Fabric of your choice

Measure and Cut the Headboard
Start by measuring the width of your bed and determining how tall you want your headboard to be. Once you have your measurements, use a saw to cut the plywood or particle board to the desired size.
Add Foam Padding
Next, lay the cut plywood or particle board on a flat surface. Take the foam padding and lay it on top of the wood, making sure it covers the entire surface. Trim any excess foam if necessary. Use a staple gun to secure the foam to the wood, placing staples around the edges and in the center to ensure it stays in place.
Cover with Fabric
Now it’s time to cover the foam with fabric. Lay the fabric flat on a large table or the floor with the wrong side facing up. Place the padded plywood or particle board on top of the fabric with the foam side facing down. Pull the fabric tightly around the edges of the wood and staple it in place, starting from the center and working your way out to the corners. Trim any excess fabric if needed.
Attach Mounting Hardware
Finally, attach the mounting hardware to the back of the upholstered headboard. This will allow you to easily attach the headboard to the bed frame or directly to the wall, depending on your preference. Follow the instructions provided with the mounting hardware to ensure it is securely attached.
