Gather your materials
To build a collapsible workbench for easy storage, you will need a few materials:
- Two 2×4 boards (at least 8 feet long)
- Four 1×4 boards (at least 8 feet long)
- One 1×6 board (at least 8 feet long)
- One sheet of plywood (at least 4×8 feet and ¾ inch thick)
- Two sets of heavy-duty hinges
- Wood screws
- Wood glue
- Drill
- Saw
- Tape measure
Determine the desired size of your workbench
Before you start cutting the wood, consider how large you want your workbench to be. Measure out the space where you plan to store it, and take into account your workspace needs.
Keep in mind that the dimensions may vary depending on your preferences, but a common size for a collapsible workbench is about 4 feet long and 2 feet wide.
Cut and assemble the frame of the workbench
Using the 2×4 boards, cut four pieces to your desired length for the legs of the workbench. Cut four additional pieces to the width you want for the top of the workbench.
Assemble the frame of the workbench by attaching the legs to the top pieces using wood screws and wood glue. Make sure the legs are perpendicular to the top and secure them tightly.
Secure the plywood top
Place the sheet of plywood on top of the frame and secure it with wood screws. Space the screws evenly along the edges of the plywood to ensure a sturdy attachment.
If desired, you can also add additional support underneath the plywood by attaching smaller strips of wood along the length of the frame using wood screws.
Add hinges for collapsibility
In order to make your workbench collapsible for easy storage, you will need to add hinges to the legs. Measure the distance between the legs and attach the hinges at the corresponding points.
Make sure the hinges are securely fastened to both the legs and the frame. It is recommended to use heavy-duty hinges to support the weight of the workbench.
Once the hinges are attached, you can fold the legs inward to collapse the workbench for storage. To secure the legs in place, you can add latches or hooks to keep them from unfolding accidentally.
By following these steps, you can easily build a collapsible workbench for easy storage. This compact and versatile workbench is perfect for small spaces or for those who need the flexibility of being able to store their workbench when not in use.
Remember to gather all your materials, determine the desired size of your workbench, cut and assemble the frame, secure the plywood top, and finally, add hinges for collapsibility. With a little bit of time and effort, you can have a functional workbench that can be easily stored away when not in use. Happy building!
