Use Soap and Water
The first and most common way to clean a sponge is by using soap and water. Start by wetting the sponge thoroughly to ensure it absorbs the soap properly. Next, apply a small amount of liquid soap or dish detergent directly onto the sponge. Begin scrubbing the sponge vigorously, making sure to cover all surfaces. Focus on any areas that may be stained or have a buildup of dirt. Rinse the sponge with warm water until all the soap residue is gone. Squeeze out any excess water and let it air dry.
Microwave Method
If you want to kill bacteria or germs that may be living in your sponge, the microwave method is a good option. Start by wetting the sponge to prevent it from catching fire in the microwave. Place the sponge in a bowl of water and make sure it is completely submerged. Microwave the sponge for two minutes on high power. Be careful when removing the sponge from the water as it will be hot. Allow it to cool down before using it again.
Vinegar Soak
Vinegar is a natural disinfectant and can be used to clean and deodorize your sponge. Create a solution by mixing equal parts of distilled white vinegar and warm water in a bowl or container. Place the sponge in the solution and let it soak for at least 15 minutes. This will help kill any bacteria or odors. Rinse the sponge thoroughly under running water to remove any vinegar residue. Squeeze out excess water and let it air dry.
Bleach Solution
If you prefer a stronger disinfectant, you can use a bleach solution to clean your sponge. Start by creating a solution of one part bleach to nine parts water in a bowl or container. Submerge the sponge in the solution and let it soak for five minutes. Make sure the bleach solution reaches all parts of the sponge. Rinse the sponge thoroughly under running water to remove any bleach residue. Squeeze out excess water and let it air dry. Make sure the sponge is completely dry before using it again to prevent any lingering bleach smell.
Dishwasher Cleaning
If you have a dishwasher, this is a convenient method to clean your sponge. Place the sponge on the top rack of your dishwasher, away from any dishes or utensils. Run the dishwasher on a hot water cycle with a little dish detergent. The hot water and detergent should help clean and disinfect the sponge. Once the cycle is complete, remove the sponge from the dishwasher and let it air dry. Make sure the sponge is completely dry before using it again.
